What’s it worth?

After you buy something from a thrift store, antique store or flea market do you ever wonder if it might be valuable?  Most of the time I don’t, but sometimes my thoughts turn to “what if”.

I recently bought this picture at Goodwill, yes I shop there a lot, for $4.99.  I bought it for the frame and mat.  I planned to remove the picture it came with and replace it with something else.  I like this print, but thought I could find something I liked better.  Once I got it home, I looked at the writing and began to think, what if this is worth something?

I did a little research and found out that Georg Dionysius Ehret is the artist.  His was a botanist, entomologist and master botanical illustrator and his drawings were featured in Griffith Hughes’ The Natural History of Barbados, published in London, 1750.  Panteek.com sells the detailed folio prints that have been hand colored for $995.  Wow, I wish this was one of those!  Mine, however, I’m sure is a print of a print of a print.  But I think I like it and am going to keep it this way for a while.

Isn’t it fun to think that maybe something we bought might be valuable?

  1. I know ya never know really what ya might find. Some people do not realize what they give away and then we some times get to be the lucky ones to find it!;)

  2. Lorna, great post! Each time I come home with my thrift finds from Goodwill and Salvation Army, I immediately come home and look it up on the internet...especially items that have embossed stamps or the manufacturer's label on the bottom. I can't tell you how many times I have spent $4.99 on an item that is worth $40-$50! You just never know!
