DIY Art

I had collected a few canvases that I had gotten at a bargain and wanted to create some kind of art.  I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted and even tried a few things that failed miserably.  If you look real hard in the pictures you might can see evidence of those failures, but I love the texture it adds, so all is good.

I had bought 3 of these little paint kits a couple of years ago at Hobby Lobby on sale for a $1 or $2.  They came with a little paint brush, which I have put to good use, and a few little pots of paint.

I bought this larger one last week at Hobby Lobby and it was on clearance for $1.40.  I knew when I bought it that I didn't like the look of it, but at that price I could do something that I DID like.

I started out by priming these so that the print would not show through.  I used a spay primer by Zinsser Bin Primer.

Next step was a base coat in the color of my choice.

I was making this up as I went along.  I felt like it needed a boarder or something to define the space.  So, I taped the edges off with painters tape to create this boarder.

The next thing I did was add a second color, Black, and just smear it on.  I wanted some variation of color.

I did the same thing with the little ones.

I used a stencil to create the "Art" in the center, and then removed the painters tape.

And here they are as a group.  Please excuse the chair, I'm not sure why I choose this location for the group picture.  I haven't figured out where I want to hang these, but wherever they end up, I know that they will add a special touch.

Decorative Chalkboard

If you like to shop Thrift Stores, be on the look out for old pictures with big chunky frames.  I found this one for around $4.oo and knew exactly what I wanted to do with it.  I have no before picture, some how it vanished into thin air, but the after is what's most important.

I bought this paint at Habitat for Humanity Re-Store, and found a new favorite place to shop for furniture to renovate and repurpose.  You can never have too many favorite shopping spots!

This is the beginning a new Spring Vignette that I'm putting together slowly.  Slowly because that how Spring seems to be coming.

Painted Mirror Makeover

I usually like my mirrors a little more chunky, but this one whispered to me, it needed an update.  It has some really good lines and good details to highlight with some paint.

After taping it off, I gave it a good spray of primer.  Once it was dry, I began laying on the paint.  It's my favorite part!

Now, this mirror, screams style.

Created Style

Everyone has a style, everyone has favorite colors, favorite patterns, favorite designs.  In other words we all know what it is we like, we know what is pleasing to our eye.

So what someone else loved in their home, may not fit into what we are trying to accomplish in our home.  I like taking something that is less than appealing to me, and making my own.  I guess you can say, that is how I create my style.

I bought this wall hanging at a thrift shop even though I really didn't like it too much.  I love Iris' and I love purple, I even love the crackle finish, but as a whole it just didn't work for me.  But I knew I could turn it into something that I really did like.

With a little paint, some scrapbook paper, and a Chip Board letter, I transformed this into something that will fit into MY style.

It's interesting to me to see how we put different things together to form a style that is all our own.

I would love to hear from you, leave me a note and let me know you stopped by!

Painted Candle Sticks

I found these beauties at Goodwill.  I love the shape, the texture, the heaviness, and the difference of each one.  I just wasn't convinced I loved the color, so.......I painted them.

I gave a sneak peek during the Valentine Vignette post.

You can see all of the Valentine decor here.

I gathered my supplies and tackled that golden/brassy color by layering on the paint.  Here is what I used.

And here is how they turned out.

Now, they are more my style.

A Valentines Vignette

I don't do a lot of decorating for Valentine's Day, but I do love the color RED, so I came up with a vignette.  I pulled out a few things I created and/or bought last year and threw it together.  I like how it turned out.

I made these hearts last year by covering wooden hearts, bought @ Hobby Lobby, and covering them with scrapbook paper and adding some glitter.

I created this Cloche by taking a large glass jar, tuning it upside down, and putting the lid on top.  For more Cloche ideas head on over to Marty's at A Stroll Thru Life for her "Cloche Party".

I'm loving how the RED looks against the GRAY of this piece of furniture.
